As part of Women in Construction week, Business Manager Sam Mohabir shares interesting insights into her experience within the industry.
Celebrating Women in Construction Week
At Freedom Living Solutions, we are proud to celebrate Women in Construction Week by highlighting the incredible contributions of the women within our team. Women play an essential role in every part of our business – from office administration and management to design and on-site construction trades. One of these remarkable women is Sam Mohabir, our dedicated Business Manager.
From Office to Construction: A Unique Career Path
Sam didn’t initially plan for a career in construction; she fell into it by chance. Starting as an Office Manager and PA to directors, she quickly developed a passion for the industry and its dynamic nature. Now, as a fully qualified Quantity Surveyor and Business Manager with over 11 years of experience, Sam thrives in a role that encompasses business development, project management, subcontractor coordination, procurement, and client liaison.
What keeps her engaged? “The variety. No two days are the same. Seeing a project through from start to finish – especially when it results in someone’s forever home – is the most rewarding part of the job.”
Breaking Barriers in a Male-Dominated Industry
As a woman in construction, Sam has encountered a few challenges. One amusing yet telling experience is the assumption people make based on her name. “Being a ‘Sam,’ people automatically assume I’m a man. I’ve had callers hang up when they realise I’m a woman – it always makes me laugh!”
Despite industry biases, she has had strong support from within the company. “Our director, Daniel, has always been incredibly supportive. He doesn’t see gender as a factor, but he will stand up for the women in our business if we’re treated unfairly.”
Passion, Projects, and Progress
When asked what she enjoys most about her job, Sam’s answer is simple: “Handover. That moment when a client sees their new home for the first time – it makes everything worthwhile.” She takes pride in every project Freedom Living Solutions completes, knowing that their work provides greater independence and accessibility for clients.
Sam believes essential skills for success in her role include compassion, empathy, and time management. She has also seen positive shifts in the industry over the years: “It’s fantastic to see more and more women joining construction. It proves that skills, not gender, define success in this field.”
Looking to the Future
Sam believes that companies like Freedom Living Solutions can continue to support women in construction through work experience opportunities and apprenticeships, ensuring the next generation has a clear pathway into the industry.
Her advice for women considering a career in construction? “Don’t get hung up on gender – unless you’re being treated unfairly. Work collaboratively, focus on your strengths, and always strive to be the best you can be.”
Changing Perceptions
When asked what she wishes more people understood about women in construction, Sam’s response is clear: “Judge people on their skill set, not their gender. But really, that applies to everyone, not just women.”
At Freedom Living Solutions, we couldn’t agree more. We are proud to have talented women like Sam leading the way in construction, and we remain committed to fostering a more inclusive and diverse industry for all.
