Project Description

A new build annexe within the grounds of a residential property in Canterbury, Kent. The single-storey building has been sympathetically designed to blend with a Grade II listed property within a conservation area.

Freedom delivered construction and specialist fit-out works under a Minor Works Building Contract with contractors design. Kent Design Studio was the project architect.

Meeting the Design Brief
This accessible annexe was bespoke designed for a 25-year-old with a spinal cord injury awaiting discharge from Stoke Mandeville. Key to the brief was creation of an accessible home close to the family residence whilst maintaining privacy and independence.

In keeping with the special requirements for a Listed building within a historic landscape, the annexe is a traditional timber-frame construction. The clay peg roof tiles are handmade in Kent.

The property has been enhanced with sustainable features and Assistive Technologies to help the client feel safer and more confident within their new home.

The annexe was partially DFG-funded and we worked alongside the client’s Trusted Assessor and support network to deliver an optimally adapted solution for the available budget.

Accessible external landscaping is in keeping with environment and includes aggregate filled pathways around the property and eco-grid permeable paving.

The Annexe building was handed over in December 2024. Weather dependent external works, including levelling to lay the lawn and a wildflower link pathway to main house, will be undertaken in Spring 2025.
